Freedom from Fear

Fear appears to brood ominously over the whole human race. It is chiefly responsible for the sickness which holds so many in bondage—is, indeed, a prolific source of all kinds of suffering. It claims to deaden men's finer sensibilities, and wherever it is in evidence a gloom is cast. It is one of mankind's most persistent and troublesome enemies. Everybody has experienced fear; everybody has been the victim of fear; everybody would gladly be rid of fear.

Is it possible, then, to undermine and to destroy this foe to the peace of mankind, which so often tragically asserts itself in human experience? Is there a remedy for fear? If so, surely men will welcome it, should it be presented to them. Christian Science, which is the Science of Christianity, presents the remedy, the certain remedy. And it is none other than that used by Christ Jesus and his disciples, namely, an understanding of the love of God. Thus it comes about that to become acquainted with the remedy for fear we are led to the consideration of the nature of God, the nature of God's creation, man, and the nature of God's relationship to man.

The Bible teaches that God is Love. The Old Testament seers gradually made approach to this truth, and in some measure demonstrated it. Jesus understood it marvelously clearly, and proved it on numerous occasions by healing disease and sin; and his disciples, receiving the divine message from the lips of the Master, likewise understood it and likewise proved the truth of it, afterwards handing on the inspired teaching to all who would accept it in their own day and in the ages to come. The truth that God is Love has thus come down to our time and has been accepted by Christian Science; and this Science is amplifying the meaning of the message and showing how the acceptance of it and the realization of it destroy fear, heal disease, and make men free. Through its clear teaching as to the nature of God and His creation, man, and God's constant loving relationship to man, Christian Science is lifting the shadows from mortal existence and ushering in a new era, an era of better health, higher morality, and, consequently, of spiritual freedom.
