When, ten years ago, Christian Science was presented to my wife and me in Johannesburg, we were in sore need of it. At that time my wife was advised by a leading surgeon to undergo a severe operation for stomach trouble, from which she suffered continually Just then a friend who had been subject to attacks of asthma practically all her life returned to the boarding house where we were residing. She was looking so much better that my wife remarked about it. Our friend said she had been healed of asthma through Christian Science while at Cape Town, where she had such a severe attack that the doctors there could do no more for her, and ordered her to leave for up-country immediately. It was then she turned to Christian Science, and through reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was healed in a few days. This so impressed us that, though I had at one time been a scoffer at Christian Science, we were willing to try it. We attended the next Sunday evening's service, and were so much impressed with the peace and beauty of it that we were regular attendants from that time onward. Help was asked of a practitioner at once, and in three or four days the attacks from which my wife suffered gradually ceased, and she was healed.

Shortly after this healing I was enabled to make a demonstration for myself over a bad cold. It entirely disappeared within twelve hours, by my keeping in thought what I had read in Science and Health to the effect that God is the only power and creates nothing but good, so that evil or sickness is not real and therefore has no power. This was a great encouragement to me, for I had been subject to heavy colds and bronchial trouble.

About nine months later I experienced a very beautiful and instantaneous healing of what is called chronic colitis. I had suffered from stomach weakness all my life, and had been operated on twice during the two previous years, having had to go to England for the second operation under a specialist. When we commenced the study of Christian Science, I gave up all material remedies. On the morning that I was healed I had a particularly bad attack, but insisted upon going to my office. My took me there, but I was suffering such pain and weakness that I simply shut myself in my office and would not allow even my wife to be there. I felt that the crisis had come and that I could not go on any longer. Then I telephoned to a practitioner, who asked if I could come to his office. I said I was too weak to do so, and he replied he would come to me, but just then a voice seemed to speak to me and say, Of course you can go; and I at once said I would go to him. How I got to his office I hardly know. When he was speaking to me I was scarcely conscious of what he said; but about a quarter of hour later I left his office completely healed, with the words ringing in my ears: God is your Life; you have no other life! I went back to my office a new man.
