The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Stockholm, Sweden (Second Church).

Lecturer: Dr. Hendrik J. de Lange; introdused by Mrs. Sigrid Beskow, who said:—

Was there ever a time when mankind was not looking for and seeking happiness and harmony? And how many have been able to say, after a lifelong struggle, that they had found that for which they had been so eagerly and earnestly seeking? From early childhood till later years, there remained with me a secret wish to experience complete happiness; but as I passed through many varied human experiences there remained an unsatisfied craving for something better, higher, and holier.

Not many years ago I borrowed the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and out of curiosity began to study it. On page 390 of this book Mrs. Eddy says: "It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores harmony." Through the persistent and consecrated study of the textbook, in connection with the Bible, I not only found that long-sought-for happiness of heart, but also that which I had ceased to hope for, namely, strength and health, freedom from many discordant conditions and from extreme bodily weakness. I found God, who is not only unchanging Love, but also "a very present help in trouble;" and from the day I began its study, this Science of Life has met my every need.

A Christian Science lecture affords a wonderful opportunity for learning something about God, or good, and how this understanding will replace discord with harmony; and I rejoice to know that no seeker for Truth will go away unsatisfied to-night. Jesus said, "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled."
