For some time I have desired to send my testimony of...
For some time I have desired to send my testimony of gratitude for all that Christian Science had done for me and mine in the past seven years. I had been working away from my family, and an overwhelming sense of homesickness made my life miserable. The lady with whom I roomed, a student of Christian Science, seeing my need asked me to attend a Wednesday evening testimony meeting. It seemed to me I never knew such a sense of peace as I experienced at that meeting, and the lonesomeness left me. I felt so uplifted that I asked my friend to lend me a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. This was the turning point in my life.
Since then my family has been reunited. Many kinds of so-called children's diseases have been healed—whooping cough, measles, and numerous other ills, including influenza, pneumonia, sore throat, and toothache. After wearing glasses for seventeen years, specialists in three different states having said that I would never be able to do without them, and that they would have to be changed at intervals, I was healed through the study of the textbook and the Lesson-Sermons, together with Mrs. Eddy's other books and the Christian Science periodical literature. That was six years ago, and I have never needed them since.
We have five children attending the Christian Science Sunday School. Two children were born with practically painless childbirth, with the help of a loving practitioner. We have proved repeatedly that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need," as our Leader says on page 494 of Science and Health.
Another wonderful healing was that of eczema, which had continued for nearly a year. I was visiting my family, who are not interested in Science, and my mother, seeing this difficulty, at once began to tell me what to use. I took my stand and said, "What God cannot do, man need not attempt' " (ibid., p. 231). No more was said, but the next time I had occasion to notice there was not a trace of the disease left.
When our boy was a baby an abdominal condition manifested itself, which, work as I would, continued. Then one winter the child's father, who is not a student of Christian Science, asked me to have a friend help me make a truss for him, saying he did not think Science could heal it without a support. I could not see it that way; so, after working and praying long and earnestly for light, I called a practitioner, who lovingly told me to remember the child was as much his father's as mine. I then consented to go a lady to have the truss made. After an hour's work she said it looked like a rupture and yet it did not act like one, and she advised me to have him examined by a doctor to settle the question. A doctor who examined the child said it was hydrocele and would require an operation. On leaving the doctor's office I asked my husband if he would leave it with Christian Science, and he replied, "As long as it is healed I do not care what does it." In less than two weeks this trouble and completely disappeared and has not returned. My fear being removed, the condition disappeared.
Words are inadequate to express my appreciation for what Christian Science has done for me, for the new understanding of God as Love, and for the purity of Mrs. Eddy, who had the moral courage, in the face of the criticism of the world, to make known what to human sense seemed impossible.—(Mrs.) Laura A. Welter, Gildford, Montana.
