Freedom from evil influences has always been my desire,...
Freedom from evil influences has always been my desire, even though carnal appetites seemed to hold me in subjection. On attempting to allay the craving for intoxicants by the use of so-called will-power, the relief would be only temporary, and again the mesmeric claim would present itself, only to find me an unwilling victim. A physical condition which doctors had failed to diagnose or rectify seemed to aggravate the situation by offering insidious whispers of self-pity. Although I did not understand it, my faith in the New Testament was unshaken. Even after groping about in the darkness of sensuality, my trust in the power of God would not falter, though the way was not clear, In the Bible the following verse describes the state of things when Christian Science came into my experience: "But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped."
Contrary to expectation, my interest in the Holy Bible was kindled. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy unlocked the truth contained in the Bible, and now I am beginning to perceive the Word revealed therein in some degree. The realization that Christian Science is my greatest need, and the fact that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494), have brought me convincing proof that the real man never desires anything but spiritual ideas, and that this desire is always fulfilled.
Drinking and smoking have been overcome. The physical discord referred to above is fast disappearing, and erroneous traits of character are submitting to the truth about man. These beginnings urge me to share with others my gratitude for the noble work of our Leader in establishing The Mother Church and its activities. For the joy of Sunday school work and the desire to serve the Cause of Christian Science, I give thanks to our Father-Mother God.
