Christian Science has been the subject of several articles...
Republic City News
Christian Science has been the subject of several articles appearing recently in issues of your paper, beginning with the issue of April 18, in which were printed some quotations under the caption, "To the Public." As an authorized representative of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, founded by Mary Baker Eddy, kindly permit me to say for the information of your readers that Mrs. Eddy is the author of many works on Christian Science, but it is assumed that these quotations were taken from the 1903 edition of her principal work, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the original, standard, and only textbook on Christian Science Mind-healing.
The followers of Mrs. Eddy, correctly known as Christian Scientists, have no objection to the quotations from her principal work given in your issue of April 18, except that the name of the book should have been given and that the quotations, or corresponding quotations, should have been taken from its final edition. The first edition of this textbook was published in 1875. It was revised several times by its author; and these revisions were made, as Mrs. Eddy says on page 361, "only to give a clearer and fuller expression of its original meaning." No fair-minded person is likely to criticize any author for doing this.
Christian Scientists do not criticize anyone for disagreeing with Mrs. Eddy's teachings, but they do feel they have the right to insist that any published statements concerning Christian Science shall correctly state what it teaches. It is not my purpose to enter into any public discussion of Christian Science, but I may be permitted to comment briefly on a few of the references to its teachings in the articles which have recently appeared in your paper.
