Signs of the Times

[H. R. L. Sheppard, D. D., in the Christian World, London, England]

Do you mind my respectfully suggesting that for three days, and for three days only, we should, if we have never tried it before, try it now and see if we can live in the spirit of Jesus Christ; try for three days only—that is the start I suggest—to do the kind of things which we know he would wish us to do and say the kind of things he would love us to say, and to help the kind of people he would love us to help? If we would but try for three days only to live in his spirit, then I know, for it has never failed, that we should come to see that there was a spirit of God, whom we were not able to understand, whom we could not write about, whom we knew little of, but yet a spirit of God which was like the love of Christ in our hearts, and that it could take us by the hand and lead us along the pathway of life. . . .

We should try to see if there be really in the world to-day a power for us which will enable us to surmount the hardest task we have, that will give us courage and hope and happiness and joy, and keep the smile on our faces and the courage in our hearts. I believe that if we try we shall find that there really is this spirit and that on the world to-day presses down this gift of God for the sons of men, which knows no distinction of race or creed or person, but is available for all men and all women in their hours of need. And that is the spirit of God.
