Christian Science was revealed to me at a time when I...
Christian Science was revealed to me at a time when I seemed to have reached an extremity; and I shall always be devoutly grateful for this experience, as it was the means of my reaching out for something other than operations, medicine, and material aids. I had been a great sufferer for many years from many discordant conditions. I was taken ill one night, and a physician who lived in the same hotel was called. Upon his arrival at my bedside, he was not long in deciding that it was clearly a surgical case, and he said he would give me something to quiet my suffering until morning, when I would be taken to a hospital for an operation as soon as arrangements could be made. However, when morning came, I could not reconcile myself to the thought of another such experience, so the physician was advised that I would not consent to going to the hospital just yet. After this decision was made, the thought came to me very clearly, and as a ray of light in a mighty gloom, that there was something else for me.
Very shortly after that a dear friend called at my door to inquire about me. I had heard she was a Christian Scientist, but that did not mean much to me as I knew almost nothing of its teachings. She made no mention of this truth to me, but almost before I realized what I was saying, I asked, "Do you think Christian Science can do anything for me?" In her kind and loving way she answered, "It can do you no harm." I then asked for help from a practitioner. Work was begun at once; but it was several hours before the practitioner reached my room, by which time I was very weak from the pain. It was quite hard for me to understand much of the wonderful things about God that she was telling me, but I did understand that "God is love." I was asked to think of the twenty-third psalm, which I repeated over and over, until I fell asleep. Later in the afternoon I awoke with the realization that I was healed. I hardly knew how, nor could I quite understand the feeling of uplift, joy, and freedom, and why everything seemed so changed and peaceful. That evening I arose, dressed myself, and joined my husband at dinner.
I at once took up the earnest study of Christian Science and from that time until this, almost eleven years, I have had no other physician than the great Physician, the Giver of all good and perfect gifts; and my every need has been met when the truth has been properly and understandingly applied. Sorrow, separation, accident, and illness have faded away under the power of divine Love.
