Giving Thanks to God
If men better understood the nature of God, if they realized that His goodness is unlimited, they would never cease to be grateful. Christ Jesus exemplified the spirit of gratitude in an extraordinary degree, often giving audible expression of it in thanks to God. He thanked God as he fed the famished multitude. He thanked God before he awakened Lazarus from the sleep of death. Always conscious of the perfection and goodness of God, always aware of the Father's protecting care, Jesus ceased not to be grateful nor to express his gratitude in a life of purity and good deeds. He could not have done otherwise, since he had such a clear apprehension of the Father's love for all His children.
As with the Master, so it was with the apostles. It is wonderful, for example, to observe the extent of the gratitude which Paul expressed during his strenuous missionary life. Amid the many trials of that career, trials which must have tested his faith to the uttermost, he never ceased to glory in the Christ, Truth, by which he was able to overcome them, never failed to voice his thanks to God, whom he understood to be the source of all good. The vision that had come to him through the Christ never failed him; the glory and goodness of God which the Christ had revealed to him never ceased to sustain within him that spirit of thankfulness which did so much to hearten and bless the early Christian church.
God is good. God is infinite good. And His creation is like Himself, altogether good. In the light of this truth, should men ever cease to be grateful? Surely, if they were convinced of God's unlimited goodness, they would not cease to voice their gratitude. But the difficulty with many is that they do not fully accept the truth which Christian Science reveals, namely, that God is infinite good. They believe that there are two real powers, good and evil; that evil is as real as good; and believing thus, they are unable to let their hearts go out in unceasing thankfulness to God.
