[Written for the Sentinel]

Prayer

OH , not for added blessings,
     Dear Father, would we pray;
We know Thy gracious presence
     Is with us all the way;
But to the truth of being
     Open our eyes to-day!

We ask Thee, Lord, to quicken
     In us the listening ear,
The conscious understanding
     Of Life forever here,
Which leaves no good ungranted,
     No place for doubt or fear.

We would not, could not, Father,
     Annul Thy high decree;
It was in the beginning,
     Is now, shall ever be;
But Love that passeth knowledge,
     Open our hearts to see!

Oh, Word by Jesus spoken
     Upon the mount, above
The multitude which followed,
     O Truth, and Life, and Love,
May we, by demonstration,
     Thy benediction prove!
