Christian Science came into my life when I was a child
Christian Science came into my life when I was a child. I willingly accepted the good it brought to me, but made little effort to gain a demonstrable understanding of it. When inharmonious physical conditions manifested themselves, help was always asked of a Christian Science practitioner and many healings were experienced. I went on in this way for many years. Then, about seven years ago, I found myself in daily association with many earnest students of Christian Science. This association had continued for over a year and a half when I suddenly felt a real desire to understand Christian Science and to practice it in my daily life. The spiritual vision, the joy and peace which accompanied that awakening have continued to be an inspiration.
Several years ago I experienced a healing for which I am very grateful. Upon going to bed one night I found it seemingly impossible to lie down because of severe pains in one side of my head. I arose and began to read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and endeavored to realize the truth of what I read; but conditions appeared to grow worse and I became fearful. About midnight help was asked of a Christian Science practitioner. Relief came gradually, and by six o'clock in the morning I was free from pain, but still fearful. That evening conditions became much worse, and the sense of pain returned. Help in Christian Science was again asked for. When I seemed to be losing consciousness the singing of hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal by dear friends who were with me aroused me to mental alertness. Four hours after help had been asked of the practitioner, I fell asleep free from pain and with this sentence from the Christian Science textbook (p. 276) filling my thought, "Man and his Maker are correlated in divine Science, and real consciousness is cognizant only of the things of God." The fear had been destroyed; but another lesson needed to be learned before complete physical freedom from accompanying inharmonious conditions was realized. Several days later, when discouragement seemed to fill my thought, an undesirable trait of disposition was uncovered to me by a friend. Pride and resentment seemed for a while to overwhelm me. Then, as plainly as though it had been spoken to me, came the healing, comforting message, "Your life is hid with Christ in God." Immediately came the realization that none of the erroneous beliefs which seemed so real to me could possibly be a part of my true selfhood, that "life . . . hid with Christ in God." Pride gave way to humility and resentment to love. Complete physical freedom was realized two days' later, and the healing has been permanent.
