A Healing Revolution

On page 101 of "Miscellaneous Writings" Mrs. Eddy writes: "Christian Science and the senses are at war. It is a revolutionary struggle." The evidence of the corporeal senses is incompatible with true Christianity as demonstrated by Christ Jesus. Then shall the evidence of the physical senses be denied or shall demonstrable Christianity be denied? The denial of Christianity is materialistic and increasingly retrogressive: the denial of physical sense evidence and its replacement by spiritual sense is harmonious and progressive. All revolutions recorded in the world's history include suffering and bloodshed, and the punishment of the just for the unjust. The revolution wrought in human consciousness by Christian Science is accompanied by the healing of mind and body, by liberation from sin, sickness, and discord.

Spiritual sense ever testifies to the holy things of God and man, to joy, harmony, eternal perfection, and to nothing else. Why, then, does many a mortal wait to turn to God until driven to this course by mental anguish, failure, or the extremity of physical suffering? Because he has been educated to believe that his health, his happiness, and his success in life are gained through materiality and are subordinate to its fluctuations. The adoption of such false views often results in the temporary loss of all these spiritual gifts of God.

The five physical senses are at once the lure and the bane of mankind. Their evidence constitutes the world of mortals; and it is just this false evidence which alone blinds them to the omnipresent realm of Spirit. Christ Jesus said, "Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not?" It should be remembered that the so-called mind of mortals does not like to be inconvenienced, or to have its beliefs revolutionized. Indeed, it pleads for what our Leader refers to as "a false, convenient peace" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 211). Hence it is only in proportion as an individual honestly allows the law of God, the law of true peace, purity, and progress, to purge and govern his innermost thinking, that he can enter the realm of real consciousness, which is heaven.
