Spiritual Growth

Spiritual growth is a great necessity. And how earnest is the desire of the genuine student of Christian Science for it! He has seen what spiritualization of thought can do in raising men out of the gutter of sin, in healing them of disease, in destroying lack, in wiping away the tears of sorrow and regret; and knowing its value, he prays that his own consciousness shall become more spiritual, and that mankind generally may be similarly blessed.

Spirituality, and yet more spirituality, is the need of men and nations; for all the sorrow, suffering, and distress in the world are due to lack of it—or, more specifically, to its opposite, materiality. All the joylessness of life is due to materiality; all the tragedy of life is due to materiality. To get rid of the somber gloom that hangs over mortals, the mesmeric power of materiality must be broken and its place taken by spirituality, which is the spontaneous and inevitable result of spiritual understanding.

Now, what must be done to achieve this great end? In other words, how is spiritual understanding to be gained? But, first of all, what is spiritual understanding—this that is necessary to secure and to increase spirituality? It is the understanding of God, Spirit, and of His creation, including individual man. Here, surely, is the province of Christianity—of Christian Science! Christian Science, based on the teachings of the Bible, and especially on those of Christ Jesus, certainly gives this understanding to all who are desirous of it. And while explaining the things of God and showing the relationship between God and man, Christian Science makes plain the errors which mortals entertain about both God and man, thereby enabling them to get rid of the errors.
