Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication for the Year Ended September 30, 1927

Illinois.

It is gratifying to speak of the splendid courtesy and cooperation manifested by the editors of some nine hundred daily and weekly newspapers published in Illinois. The editor of the Daily Journal of Herrin, Illinois, who has liberally opened his columns to the activities of the Christian Science church, was recently asked if he desired to continue printing our weekly excerpts from the Sunday Lesson-Sermons during the coming year. He said, "We assuredly do." I am confident that the regular weekly publication of citations from our Sunday church services, which are supplied by this office to over one hundred newspapers in the form of plates, mats, and printed sheets, free of charge, has added many editors to our hosts of friends.

Our serial educational feature entitled "Good Thoughts For Good People," comprising excerpts from the Christian Science periodicals and quotations from selected authors, continues to furnish good copy for Illinois newspapers. The popularity of this service, now in its fourth year, warrants the assumption that editors appreciate our feature for its intellectual and moral qualities. In this connection it is interesting to report that in Elgin, Illinois, our "Good Thoughts For Good People," published biweekly in the Courier-News, is used by pupils of the grade schools in their character building study. The children prepare cards headed with selected subjects, such as kindness, mercy, honesty, et cetera. Appropriate quotations from "Good Thoughts" are clipped from the newspaper and mounted on the cards, which are then classified and reviewed.
