A communication appeared in your recent issue which is very misleading in its statements regarding Christian Science and its Discoverer and Founder, Mary Baker Eddy. Notwithstanding all that your correspondent may think, say, or write, there is no gainsaying the fact that Mrs. Eddy was healed, and healed instantaneously, of the results of a serious accident from which it was feared she could not recover. Further, there is no question but that Mrs. Eddy's healing was effected entirely by her faith in "the God of the Bible,"—to quote our critic,—the God spoken of in Psalms, who "sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions," as witness her own statement in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 108): "When apparently near the confines of mortal existence, standing already within the shadow of the death-valley, I learned these truths in divine Science: that all real being is in God, the divine Mind, and that Life, and Love are all-powerful and ever-present."
The Church of Christ, Scientist, which is such an impelling factor in the teaching of Christianity to-day, had its inception in this particular healing. Mrs. Eddy tells us (Science and Health, p. 109) that for three years she "sought the solution of this problem of Mind-healing, searched the Scriptures, ... and devoted time and energies to discovering a positive rule."
It is the divine laws of Life, Truth, and Love, discovered by Mrs. Eddy, which are daily being demonstrated by students of Christian Science all over the world in the manifestation of health, happiness, and morality. Your correspondent's reference to Christian Science and marriage is very misleading. If the writer desires our Leader's views on this subject, I would refer him to the chapter entitled "Marriage," in the Christian Science textbook. Finally, let me say that one of the religious tenets of Christian Science is: "We acknowledge and adore one supreme and infinite God. We acknowledge His Son, one Christ; the Holy Ghost or divine Comforter; and man in God's image and likeness" (Science and Health, p. 497).
