I wish to express my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for giving Christian Science to mankind. I first heard about it in Johannesburg in 1900, during the Boer War. Two copies of the Christian Science Sentinel were sent to me from England by my mother. I read them, and passed them on to my comrades; we thought Christian Science beautiful. I heard nothing more about it until 1906, when I received two more Sentinels. I passed one to a friend, who told me he was a Christian Scientist, and through him and his wife I borrowed a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I started to read at half-past ten that evening, and was still reading it at sunrise. Next, I went to a Christian Science service.

I have been able for many years by the daily study of the Lesson-Sermon to obtain results; and if it had not been for glimpses of the spiritual interpretation of our being, namely, that we are now the sons and daughters of the living God, whose arms are everlastingly supporting us, I might have been killed on many occasions during the late world war. Space will not allow me to give in detail all of these experiences, and the marvelous escapes I had. Suffice it to say that Christian Science was a protection not only to myself, but to my comrades.

I had a narrow escape from being blown up with a water tank on the railway station at Aus. There was a large sack next to the tank, and I was just going to see if there was any food in it, as we had nothing with us except what each man carried, when a voice, as of God, spoke to me distinctly, saying, "Leave it, leave it." I left it; and I heard later that it contained a charge of dynamite with which to blow up the tank.
