About twenty-eight years ago, the church in which we were active members was sold. My husband and I then began to look for a religion through which disease, as well as sin, is healed, in accordance with what Jesus taught.
After investigating several metaphysical cults, we were led to attend a Wednesday evening testimony meeting at First Church of Christ, Scientist, Washington, District of Columbia. We felt we had at last found what we were seeking—Christian metaphysics. We studied "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, proving its truths in our daily lives for two years, and then joined First Church. When Second Church of that city was organized, we became charter members of it. In order to serve more efficiently, we sought the benefit of class instruction, for which I am grateful. Our two sons and daughter have grown to manhood and womanhood having Christian Science as their guide and protection, and they are proving that it meets their every need. For the past twenty-five years no medicine has been used in our family. Every problem, whether of sickness, injury, finance, position, or location of home, has been worked out by the application of Christian Science.
Seven years ago, one night in the dark I stepped off the stair landing and fell across a turn in the stairs, striking my back on the edge of two steps. I immediately declared the truth, and did not lose consciousness, although to my husband, who reached me very quickly, it seemed as if I were passing on. Although I thought we could handle the problem, my husband wished to call a practitioner. The fall occurred late on a Monday night. The rest of the night I was kept busy shutting out error's pictures, which tried hard to enter and take possession of my thought. It seemed impossible to move without great pain. In morning, with my husband's help I tried to stand, and we clung to the truth, declaring aloud that God is Life; and the darkness gave place to light. On Thursday I walked up and down stairs twice with very little difficulty; and soon thereafter the seeming effects of the fall, both internal and external, vanished.
More recently I had another wonderful proof of the protection of the truth as taught in Christian Science. Running to reach a street car, I was knocked down by an automobile. I regained consciousness just an instant before someone picked me up and helped me to my feet. Calmly refusing to be taken to a hospital or to a doctor, and fully exonerating the driver of the machine from all blame, I asked her to take me to my home, which was about seven miles away. Sitting beside her in the car, I tried to reassure her, for she was very much frightened. I told her I was a Christian Scientist and was sure everything would come out all right; and I brought to her attention the loving-kindness and goodness of God to her as well as me. She took me to the corner near my home. I walked the rest of the way without discomfort. My foot gave me severe pain for a while that night, but this was overcome by my husband and myself knowing the truth of Being. The next morning I walked into my downtown office a little more slowly than usual—that was all. Although my knee was cut, and there was a large black bruise between my knee and hip, these gave me no trouble, and were soon forgotten and disappeared.
During these years many diseases have been healed in our family, some very quickly; and I, who was a weak, sickly woman when first I studied Christian Science, have been renewed in strength, most of my ailments having dropped away without treatment other daily study.
I am very grateful that while I have been working out my own salvation, God has enabled me to help others. I am very grateful for the privilege and opportunities of serving, and of proving what our dear Leader says in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 210): "Good thoughts are an impervious armor; clad therewith you are completely shielded from the attacks of error of every sort. And not only yourselves are safe, but all whom your thoughts rest upon are thereby benefited." I am also very grateful for the Christian Science periodicals, especially the Monitor. They have been invaluable helps in the training of our children. I am grateful for all the activities of the Christian Science movement; very grateful to God, the Giver of all good; to Christ Jesus, the Way-shower; and to Mrs. Eddy for her unselfish work for humanity.
