Patience and Tenderness in Practice
VERY early in the study of Christian Science every conscientious student feels the desire to express his gratitude for the Christ, Truth, which has brought into his daily experience peace, health, and harmony, where discord and disease once seemed very real. The greatest joy one may experience is that of being of assistance to someone who is in bondage to some false material belief. This is truly a right expression of gratitude, one that all may understand. Giving a cup of cold water in the name of Christ is, indeed, a happy privilege. Very soon we learn that "it is more blessed to give than to receive."
Christ Jesus said, "These signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." Although these words were spoken over nineteen centuries ago, they are demonstrably true to-day. As we study the words and works of Christ Jesus in the light of Christian Science, we find that only as we understand the qualities of divine Mind which he manifested, and endeavor to express them ourselves, can we be successful in the healing ministry. We should daily watch and pray for that Mind to be in us "which was also in Christ Jesus." His nature was the expression of our Father-Mother God, and was peaceful and blessed. He was ever tender, patient, loving, and meek. Each day he was about his Father's business, that of doing good.
Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, following in the footsteps of our Master, healed all manner of sin and disease. Through her writings she has given us the spiritual interpretation of the Scriptures, together with the rules of Christian healing. On page 367 of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," she says for our instruction, "The tender word and Christian encouragement of an invalid, pitiful patience with his fears and the removal of them, are better than hecatombs of gushing theories, stereotyped borrowed speeches, and the doling of arguments, which are but so many parodies on legitimate Christian Science, aflame with divine Love."
