Daily Independent
In a recent editorial you refer to certain politicians as "a sort of molly-coddle set," and say that "their theory is a sort of political Christian Science." Christian Scientists appreciate the kind reference to their religion made later in the same editorial, but I wish to correct any belief that Christian Science deals weakly or indecisively in the endeavor to overcome evil with good. Since Mrs. Eddy's discovery of Christian Science, this religion has been opposed because of its known radical reliance on God and disagreement with all material theories. No other religion has been so resolutely willing to stand for God as the only presence and power, and against many popular religious and medical theories and superstitions which disagree with the teaching and practice of Christ Jesus. Like Christ Jesus, the attitude of genuine Christian Scientists toward all individuals is one of gentleness and love, but toward evil thinking and acting their attitude is decidedly militant, and they yield no quarter. For them the struggle between Spirit and matter is on, and they will not stop their unyielding opposition to evil until the victory for God is won. The highest form of moral courage is required to be a genuine Christian Scientist.
Apropos of our subject, it is well to add that, when the divine Principle of Christian Science is universally applied in human affairs, the contest between persons will cease. In our political and economic activities the motive will come to be that of obedience to God, and the Golden Rule will then be recognized and enjoyed. Love of equitable law will supersede unworthy aims. Clearly, this happy state will not be realized in politics while men are influenced by selfish ambition and commercial greed; and only the healing power of God, of Love, involving intelligent opposition to evil, will bring to mortals the answer which honest people desire. Christian Science militantly, yet lovingly, insists that victory over the animal propensities can be won only in the mental realm through spiritual understanding.
