In October, 1908, I experienced my first healing in Christian Science, of catarrh of the stomach. A friend who knew of my difficulty told me of the wonderful cures accomplished by Christian Science and advised me to see a practitioner to get some understanding, as I had not heard of this method of healing before. The practitioner explained the system of healing to me and gave me a treatment, together with "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy; also the Bible and some pamphlets. I called on her again in a couple of days and went away very hopeful. After eleven days' treatment I was healed.
The following Wednesday evening I attended a Christian Science testimony meeting, and what I heard there convinced me of the truth of Christian Science, the truth Christ Jesus taught when on earth. The next Sunday I attended church and was impressed with the reading and singing and the simplicity of the service. I felt refreshed and hopeful. I have since been healed of sciatic rheumatism and lumbago, twice of blood poisoning, and instantaneously of ptomaine poisoning. I have also been healed of the smoking and drinking habits of forty and twenty-five years' standing, respectively.
I wish to relate a wonderful healing. In stepping across a rather wide ditch I felt something give way internally. I knew there could be no accident in God's kingdom; so I repeated the "scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468) and continued on my errand. I accomplished it, and started on the return trip, but felt faint. Someone telephoned for a physician, but he was away and would not return till evening. I lay down and fell into unconsciousness. A doctor pronounced the trouble a rupture of the gall bladder, and explained that it was one of the most delicate ruptures to deal with known to medical science; that I was not to be moved under any consideration, as my life hung by a thread.
