Christian Science came to me in an hour of great need
Christian Science came to me in an hour of great need. I was alone in a large western city, suffering from an acute intestinal trouble and a nervous breakdown. I had taken practically every kind of medicine recommended since I was a small girl; and the results having proved of so little avail, I turned from medicine to different kinds of treatments and baths. I tried osteopathy, electrical treatments, diets, enemas, alcoholic baths; and the last of the material remedies was the Battle Creek treatment. I had taken only a few of these treatments when they were stopped, as I was told I was too far gone for them to reach my case; and I was advised to consult a physician at once. This I did, and the physician recommended an immediate operation. Personally, I was very much opposed to operations; besides, I felt I was in no physical condition to go through with one. As I had just had a nervous breakdown, the thought of an operation was very distracting to me.
I had heard a little of Christian Science, but my impression of it was that it was good principally for nervous troubles. After the second physician had said that I would have to undergo an operation, and after another severe attack, when the pain was excruciating and I lay unconscious for four hours, I decided something would have to be done. I then asked a Christian Science practitioner to help me overcome my nervous condition, so that I might be able to go through with the dreaded operation. To my great surprise, she informed me that I did not need to have an operation. I stayed with her a couple of hours. She gave me a treatment, and said she would do some more work for me. This was the last of the intestinal trouble; the last of the medicine; the last of the dieting; the last of the medicinal baths; the last of all kinds of treatment except that from a Christian Science practitioner. For the first time in my life my bowels became normal. That was over eighteen years ago, and during all these years they have given no trouble. I know that God governs man, and that I do not have to be troubled. To me this was a marvelous healing, for it would be impossible to tell how much I had suffered from the condition, and how greatly handicapped I was by it.
The nervous condition, however, was very slow in yielding. I was a long time getting my physical poise, yet I gained strength from the start. Eventually, the nervous condition passed; and during these intervening years I have had many other healings through Christian Science. Frequent fainting, a heart disorder of many years' standing, periodical tonsillitis and influenza, all have been healed through Christian Science. I have also witnessed many healings of relatives and friends. I was the first member of our family to become a student of Christian Science; and after my healing I had the great pleasure of seeing each member of the family, one by one, become students. A most beautiful experience was the coming of my husband into Science. I had been a student a number of years when we were married, and on returning from our wedding trip he began attending the services with me without any solicitation on my part whatever. He has been a regular attendant since.
