When Christian Science came to me it found me in very much the same condition as the man we read of in the fourteenth chapter of Acts. I too had received serious prenatal injuries. So serious were they that the medical attendant at the birth said it would have been better for me and everyone concerned had life in me been extinct. The troubles were a very weak heart, shattered nerves, and badly misplaced organs. The extent of the last, however, was not discovered until years later, when on examination it was found that these organs had not developed since birth, and that one was consequently causing a distressing sensation in the head; in fact, it was feared that insanity might result. In addition to this I had several dangerous illnesses which left me with chronic kidney and throat trouble.
As time went on the troubles became more acute, and eventually I collapsed altogether. Had I been strong enough at this stage, a major operation would have been performed, but owing to my delicate state this was considered to be impossible; so, after medical skill had been exhausted, I was given up as incurable. It was said by one doctor that every organ in my body was more or less diseased or affected, and that it meant just a living death. I gradually grew worse, and finally was confined to my bed; and there I lay for four consecutive years.
During that time paralysis began to manifest itself, and epilepsy developed in its worst form. This state of existence became intolerable, and I begged the doctors to do something with me; and owing to my persistence they consented to carry me away to a nursing home. I prayed very earnestly for help, and did get somewhat better, so that I was able to move about from room to room; but fundamentally I was no better, and it was said that eventually I should go back to bed again.
