Progress

PERFECTION is the great attainment for which mankind is striving. Ignorance of the right way to obey the divine demand has often led to what seems to be hopeless suffering. Men have wandered in the byways of mortal mind and "sought out many inventions" to relieve them of sufferings. The sick try to attain health through the use of drugs, the sinner tries to attain satisfaction through sinning, and the mistaken religionist expects to attain heaven through dying; but these ways only lead astray from perfection.

There is the right way which Christ Jesus taught and demonstrated, the Science or exact knowledge of which has been given to the world by Mary Baker Eddy in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Christian Science teaches those who sincerely desire to find this way, that all must follow the example of Jesus. By knowing the truth about God and man, and by doing works such as the great Master did, one realizes that each can prove his perfect selfhood. The unfoldment of the truth that God is the only Mind brings into consciousness the realization of the omnipresence, omniscience, and omnipotence of Life, Truth, and Love, and, consequently, into human experience the blessings of protection, peace, health, holiness, abundance, and joy.

When one turns his footsteps in the right direction and follows where Truth leads, one's real progress begins. At first one experiences the sense of protection and peace which always accompanies the birth of the true idea. Then, right thinking ripens into action, and one learns that he must drop every mortal belief for the immortal truth. One finds that the destruction of one error presages the final destruction of all error; for, as Paul says, "this corruptible must put on incorruption," here and now. One thus realizes that he is overcoming the suffering which error brings, and is rising into a new and better sense of life.
