[Written for the Sentinel]

The Coming Day

Another day for joyous work is mine;
Each hour comes rich in opportunity
To learn God's gracious will, and to incline
My heart to follow Him more faithfully.

I have no fear of pitfalls on the way,
For Love will never wander from my side;
No tempting paths can turn my steps astray,
If I hold true to my unerring Guide.

What if the trail ahead looks rough and steep?
Sure is my trust in His unfaltering arm;
And mid the forest shadows lone and deep,
Still will His presence shelter me from harm.

One thing is certain of the coming day:
There will be glad occasions all the while
For serving, let the gift be what it may—
A helping hand, a prayer, a word, a smile.

And when night falls, with grateful praise I'll own
That every step I prayerfully have trod,
Rough, slippery, or firm, has borne me on,
And brought me nearer to the peace of God.
