In a letter published in a recent issue the reasoning of Mrs. Eddy and her followers is questioned. The heading "Sin Under Science" may possibly convey to your readers an erroneous impression of Christian Science. Please permit me to say that Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has written in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 468), in reply to the question. "What is the scientific statement of being?" the following answer: "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all. Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error. Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal. Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual." Now, the critic wants to know, "What person of intelligence believes matter is intelligent when unanimated by spirit?" Many persons believe that there is life in matter and soul in body, and that God sends disease and death. Christian Science shows that this is not true, and is refuting these beliefs by and through the understanding of the above-quoted declaration.
True, "the wages of sin is death;" but the Scripture continues, "the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Christian Science is showing mankind how to overcome, not submit to, sin, sickness, and death, in accordance with Jesus' command, "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils." To believe that there is a power apart from God is sin, because it is a violation of the First Commandment. This sin can be forsaken by following and living in obedience to Jesus' command to his followers, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Christian Science, as stated by Mrs. Eddy (Rudimental Divine Science, p. 1), is "the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony."
