Christian Science has done so much for me I can no longer withhold an expression of gratitude. I have been healed of want—lack. In 1914, when I went to a Christian Science practitioner for help, she, seeing my need, knew that as a child of God I had all good; for the Scripture reads, "Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine." But she also knew that to have this made manifest I needed to open my hand—open my thought; so she gave me an article in which was the statement, "The closed hand cannot receive." A short time after this, while studying the Lesson-Sermon, the question came to me as clearly as though someone had spoken: What does contribution to the church mean?
Other problems were being solved for me, and I knew that by the application of the right rule in Christian Science this one could be solved; but I did not know just how. The practitioner told me to read and study in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, in the Glossary (p. 595), the definition of "tithe," which is, in part, "Contribution; tenth part; homage; gratitude." Because of false pride and fear I had always been dependent upon relatives; but soon after this the way was opened for me to find my place, and every need has been met through no planning or outlining of my own.
Physical conditions have been healed—some quickly, others more slowly—through the application of Christian Science, sometimes with the help of a practitioner and at times through my own understanding. Chronic constipation, which had troubled me since childhood, was one of my first healings, and has been permanent. Lumbago, throat trouble, influenza, wens, warts, and poisoning have been healed. Paul said, "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind." I am grateful for what has seemed a slow healing, for had the healing come quickly I might have been content with the loaves and fishes and not pursued the study of this Science as a religion; but through the renewing of my mind this healing, too, is taking place.
