The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Hempstead, New York (First Church).

Lecturer: Hon. William E. Brown; introduced by Mrs. Maud Monfort Stoffel, who said:—

Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes, "Desire is prayer" (Science and Health, p. 1), and I can testify to the truth of this statement. Before knowing anything about Christian Science, when a dear one passed on, I had an overwhelming desire to understand the Bible. Each morning I would go to my room and there earnestly read the Bible and strive to understand its passages; but there seemed to be so many contradictions that one morning, in great confusion and tears, I closed the book with the thought that for some unknown reason the Bible was not understandable. Soon after this Christian Science was brought to me through the healing of my little nephew of appendicitis. I wanted to know something about this religion that had brought such comfort to us all at a very dark hour. So I went to a Christian Science Reading Room and borrowed a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, purchased a Quarterly, and commenced to study the lesson prepared for that week. I had not finished reading the lesson when I exclaimed aloud, "It is the truth." I cannot express in words the joy that filled my heart at that moment, for I knew that my prayer had been answered and that I was going to understand the Bible. Jesus said, "I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes," signifying that it is the childlike thought, the open thought, that is receptive of truth.
