Mastery of Circumstances
How many times do we hear it said, "If my circumstances were only different I should be able to make greater demonstrations;" or, "I do wish I had his opportunity;" or some such remark, expressing the belief that one individual is more favored than another.
Now Christian Science corrects any such erroneous impression regarding God and man. One of the most beautiful things about Christian Science is that it teaches that God is always available and ready to help all mankind. Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, beautifully expresses this thought on pages 12 and 13 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where she states: "In divine Science, where prayers are mental, all may avail themselves of God as 'a very present help in trouble.' Love is impartial and universal in its adaptation and bestowals. It is the open fount which cries, 'Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters.'" Note that "all" is written in italics, in order to emphasize the fact that no one is left out by this promise, and that the invitation is to "every one" that thirsts. So, in considering this wonderful promise every sincere seeker can recognize that he has an opportunity, here and now, of making his complete demonstration, the same as his brother, whom heretofore he may have thought of as more fortunate.
Let us see how we may have control over our circumstances. We are taught in Christian Science that God is Mind, the only Mind, and that this infinite Mind is reflected by all God's creation. Therefore, every one of our acquaintances, friends, business associates,—in fact, every individual with whom we may come in contact,—does, as the child of God, reflect this one Mind. Knowing this, and knowing also, as Mrs. Eddy says on page 170 of the textbook, that "spiritual causation is the one question to be considered, for more than all others spiritual causation relates to human progress," we cease to look to material ways and means to make our demonstrations, looking instead to God, Mind.
