Christian Science was presented to me about fourteen...
Christian Science was presented to me about fourteen years ago. I shall never forget my first perusal of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I was healed of many complaints, and there was such exaltation, such spiritual joy! Then I knew that it indeed was the truth which Christ Jesus taught. For a time I was wonderfully happy. Soon, however, I was tested. My husband was suddenly taken away, leaving me with three children to support. I am not going to dwell upon those dark years of doubt and fear which caused me to make many mistakes, the unnecessary loss of money, and the wrong business dealings. I came to the place where I had either to trust the heavenly Father or to go back over the ground of darkness again. The latter I dared not do; so I trusted God implicitly and was led to take the right path.
During the trying time our church passed through I took no stand on one side or the other. I thought I had enough to do to attend to my own affairs, and would not listen to any argument. Therefore, I knew not what it was all about. My love for the church was still the same—a selfish love, getting all that I could and giving nothing in return. A loving practitioner asked me if I would listen to what she had to say. I nodded assent, wondering if I would hear. On my way home the veil was lifted and a voice said, If you are a Christian Scientist, you will take your stand for the Cause. I was very conscious of that healing, but was still partially blinded; and not until about three years ago did I receive a complete healing. Only then came the full realization of what it meant to us all to have the Board of Directors of The Mother Church take such a firm stand for the Manual. I am indeed grateful for this healing; for the spiritual growth, though slow; for The Mother Church, the Board of Directors, and the Sunday school connected with the church; to the loving Father, who has guided me along the way; to Jesus the Christ; and to our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy; also to the practitioner who spent many hours helping me to see the light. It was her loving help which all through made me press on.—(Mrs.) Alice M. Dey, Boston, Massachusetts.
