It is quite evident that the remarks of the minister, in his sermon on "The Sign of the Sundial," as reported in your recent issue, referred to the column headed by this symbol in The Christian Science Monitor. In common with other Christian Scientists, I appreciate his commendation of the practice, followed by this newspaper, of selecting and presenting only such news as is wholesome. In saying that the truth was being told by this paper, but not the whole truth, he was careful to explain that by this he meant that the sordid details were purposely omitted. There are certain of the reported remarks of this minister, however, which convey quite a wrong impression. For example, following his comments on the policy of The Christian Science Monitor, he is reported to have said that sin was not cured by ignoring it. This statement, as it was used, carried the inference that Christian Scientists ignore sin in their healing work. Such is not the case.

Christian Science very definitely teaches that sin is not to be ignored, but destroyed, through the correct understanding of its unreal character. For proof of this statement, one may read the following teaching on the point by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science and author of its textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 446, 447, 448): "Covering iniquity will prevent prosperity and the ultimate triumph of any cause.... To put down the claim of sin, you must detect it, remove the mask, point out the illusion, and thus get the victory over sin and so prove its unreality.... To assume that there are no claims of evil and yet to indulge them, is a moral offence."

Another reported statement of this clergyman is that many cures wrought by Jesus were different in kind from any that may be performed to-day. Let us see what the Master himself had to say about this. He said, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." That these Christian healing works are being done to-day is evidenced by the testimonies given each week in the Wednesday evening meetings in Christian Science churches and those published in the weekly and monthly periodicals of this denomination.
