"Nothing shall by any means hurt you"
Christian Science teaches that Christians ought to be immune from all kinds of evil. Before the Master left his faithful disciple band he said to them, "These signs shall follow them that believe; ... they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." And as Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 328), "It were well had Christendom believed and obeyed this sacred saying."
Immunity from all evil! Surely that is expecting a very great deal in a world where evil appears to be at work in so many ways, where sin is so much in evidence, sickness is frequent, poverty and distress the too common lot of mortals. But if Christianity as interpreted by Christian Science be true, then it is right that the Christian should expect complete protection from all evil; and not only so, but delivery from evil, whatever the form it may assume, should he appear to become subject to it.
On what does Christian Science base its promise, a promise the same as that made by Christ Jesus to the eleven? On the allness and omnipotence of God, good. It is a fundamental truth that God is infinite good, and that good is therefore supreme. And since good is infinite, what of evil? It is unreal. Christian Science will not be stilled in its emphasizing of the fact that evil is unreal; and this, notwithstanding the universal belief of mortals in evil's presence and power. Christian Science continues steadfastly to voice the truth of God's allness and perfection; and it will continue to do so until all have awakened to recognize that in believing in the reality and power of evil they are being deceived by sheer illusion.
