From childhood I hardly knew what it was to feel well, suffering from general internal weakness and inflammation which, coupled with indigestion and constipation, became more acute year by year. Frequently I was entirely prostrate after severe pain, followed by blinding headaches and sickness. At this point the doctors' verdict was that gastric ulcers had formed, which with care, practically starvation, and special treatment might be dispersed, otherwise an operation would be necessary; but altogether they could hold out no hope of permanent betterment and said I would probably become a confirmed invalid.
After many years under different physicians and treatments, Christian Science was offered me by an old friend. Here I must mention that for years no religious teaching had satisfied me. I hungrily read anything and everything on this subject, hoping to find the God whom I knew I had glimpsed from time to time, and who was not the unthinkable Deity generally preached. The first chapter in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, entitled "Prayer," brought great joy. I quite forgot that this book had been put into my hands for physical healing, in my eagerness to find practical, provable truth about God and His Christ, available now. All this I found; and while reading the book I threw away my medicines, becoming aware that the discordant conditions were vanishing one by one. Some healings had been practically instantaneous; one trouble, however, remained, attacking me at long intervals, but with less violence. This lasted for four and a half years. Through this waiting period I learned much, all of which was necessary and good; then I asked help of a practitioner, which was instantly and lovingly given. In two days I was healed permanently, now nine years ago.
Since then in many wonderful ways I have indeed found God to be All-in-all; and I cannot be grateful enough to the pure woman who has shown Him to us in this way, and was brave and good enough to pass on to us this truth which can be proved by each and all, everywhere and for all time, as an ever present help in trouble.
