In September, 1904, I was driving my trolley in a suburb, when the folding seat turned over and I fell to the road. I was found lying unconscious and taken to my home, where I was examined by several of the leading doctors. They declared my case hopeless, as my neck was broken. After a few days I was taken to a hospital. When I became conscious I was paralyzed. During the time I was in the hospital there was a conference of medical men, and about three hundred of them examined me. They all said there was no hope, and if I lived I would never walk.
I remained in the hospital for thirteen months, and was then removed to another institution, where I am still an inmate. Up to 1924 I had gained only enough strength to be able to sit in a wheel chair. Then a kind Christian Scientist came along and gave me the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I had been reading for a few months when I went into my room one day and saw a pair of crutches there that my roommate was using. I got out of my chair and walked with them. That was in May, 1924, and I have made steady progress ever since, gaining strength every day. I can now walk without even the aid of a stick, and can do many little jobs and help others, for which I am most grateful to the good God and Christian Science. I can get on motor cars, busses, trams, and trains, and walk a good way; and I feel that when the opportunity comes I shall be able to leave the institution and earn my living. My progress has been slow, but on page 326 of Science and Health we read, "Working and praying with true motives, your Father will open the way." I am so thankful to God, to Christ Jesus, the Way-shower, and to Mrs. Eddy for the beautiful literature, and thankful to everyone who has helped me on the way.—James G. Foster, Fullarton, South Australia.
