[Written for the Sentinel]

Gentleness

Oh , sweet and tender as the dawn,
With mighty power to heal and bless,
Is God's dear gift to all His own,
The quality of gentleness.

How quickly burdens fall away,
How hearts grow light, rejoice, are glad,
When the soft touch of gentleness
Uplifts the sinning and the sad!

Oh, quality of Love divine!
Sweet as the breath of opening flower,
We quickly yield our selfishness,
Touched by thy tender, healing power.

The gentle touch of love gives joy,
Whose ripples ever widening grow;
And gentle words and tones can bless
Far more than we may ever know.

Then let us ever strive to keep
The gentleness of Love divine
Forever glowing in the heart,
That through us God's dear light may shine.
