Interboro Review

Your recent issue contained an incorrect statement concerning Christian Science, reported as having been made by a certain Lutheran minister. This statement misrepresented our Cause; so, not with the intent or desire to engage in any controversy, but merely that your readers might not be misled, I made a reply to it which you kindly published. This same minister writes a reply to my communication in your recent issue, making more misleading remarks. By way of correcting these misstatements, which reflect on Christian Science, I am asking space for a statement of facts. Our critic admits that the Bible is our guide, but asks why we consult "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. This is done because the Bible has not been correctly understood. Jesus said, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." Jesus taught the way. Mrs. Eddy has shown through her writings how to walk in the way. The results that Mrs. Eddy obtained prove that her teachings were correct, and that through a better understanding of God she was enabled to do wonderful works and to teach others to do what Jesus promised should follow them that believe. I refer to the healing of the sick and the overcoming of all the ills that flesh is heir to. Christian Scientists desire that everyone should see and Science and Health because it throws a light on the Bible that enables one to understand it.

In answer to the minister's question, "Is it not a fact that you put Science and Health above the Bible?" I would say, "No." The Bible and the Christian Science textbook are the only preachers in all Christian Science churches. When "the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death," as recorded in the fourteenth chapter of Mark, the high priest asked him, "Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?" And Jesus answered, "I am." This would indicate that Christ is not God. Mrs. Eddy writes of Jesus on page 589 of Science and Health: "Jesus. The highest human corporeal concept of the divine idea, rebuking and destroying error and bringing to light man's immortality." The man Jesus revealed "the divine manifestation of God, which comes to the flesh to incarnate error" (ibid., p. 583); this is the Christ.

John, first chapter, first verse, reads, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." The Word was preached, taught, and practiced by Jesus. So in this sense, "the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us." When Jesus inquired, "Whom say ye that I am," Simon Peter replied, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God;" and Jesus approved the answer. There are many references in the Bible which refer to Jesus the Christ as the Son of God. I must add that there is no authority anywhere for the minister's remark that "Christian Science contradicts the Bible and denies Christ;" for, as Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 497), "We acknowledge and adore one supreme and infinite God. We acknowledge His Son, one Christ; the Holy Ghost or divine Comforter; and man in God's image and likeness."
