In a syndicated article appearing in your recent issue the writer gives to your readers a very mistaken concept of the Christian Science teaching as to mind and matter. He states that "mind has power over matter," but that "mind won't cure cancer, put a filling in a tooth, heal an abscess," et cetera, and he advises his readers "not to push mind over matter too far, especially if there is a good doctor near." Whenever and wherever Christian Science refers to the power of Mind over matter it invariably indicates the divine Mind, God, and not mortal mind. Christian Science teaches that will-power, mental suggestion, hypnotism, et cetera, are products of mortal or carnal mind, and that these are always erroneous. The Bible states that the "carnal mind is enmity against God." The word "Mind," in referring to God, is always written in Christian Science literature with the capital letter "M." God, the divine Mind, is omnipotent. Mortal mind is not a power. Humanity can, through the prayer of faith and spiritual understanding, turn to God, the divine Mind, "who healeth all thy diseases," as the Psalmist states; and this prayer of the righteous will unfailingly find help in time of need.

It is a well-known fact that Christian Science has healed organic as well as functional disease. Mrs. Eddy plainly teaches in the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 270), that "the divine Mind alone heals." She also teaches that human will-power is erroneous. On page 144 (ibid.) she states: "Human will-power is not Science. Human will belongs to the so-called material senses, and its use is to be condemned. Willing the sick to recover is not the metaphysical practice of Christian Science, but is sheer animal magnetism. Human will-power may infringe the rights of man. It produces evil continually, and is not a factor in the realism of being. Truth, and not corporeal will, is the divine power which says to disease, 'Peace, be still.' "
