Joy
Mankind is learning through the ministrations of Christian Science the immense value of joyfulness. The expression of joy in all of one's activities not only is a great help to others, but it also brings to one's self much good in return, thereby unfolding still greater joy. Throughout the years since Jesus' time there has been a tendency to dwell too much on conditions which, whether individual or national, have resulted in thoughts of depression. It was not until after the discovery of Christian Science by Mary Baker Eddy in the year 1866 that mankind knew the Science of the permanent remedy for this depression.
The discovery of Christian Science brought to light the fact that the difficulties with which mankind seems to be so frequently confronted could be proved powerless, since they have no support from God, good, who is the eternal creator, and whose work is perfect. The belief that God is the originator of evil as well as of good left men helpless when faced by grave problems. Search of the Scriptures and inspiration revealed to Mrs. Eddy the glorious fact that God is infinite good, and that men have only to turn to this truth in order to lose the sense of their difficulties.
Christian Science, too, gives the comforting knowledge that since God is Spirit, man, God's offspring, must be spiritual. On page 63 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the textbook of Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy writes: "In Science man is the offspring of Spirit. The beautiful, good, and pure constitute his ancestry." Men, therefore, have the right to divine sonship with man's Father-Mother, God. Christ Jesus expressed this sonship in a never varying degree. He was master of every situation that arose, under whatever name or nature evil appeared to present itself, because he always knew his perfect relationship with the Father. He was able to prove to mankind what this understanding could accomplish in healing the sick, stilling the tempest, supplying every need, raising the dead, because he realized that he was at-one with his Father, divine Principle. The healings accomplished by Jesus were always accompanied by joy. In his parables he often made reference to the rejoicing which should accompany the victory over any sense of evil.
