Literature Distribution

"By the obedience of one shall many be made righteous," is a beautiful promise which seems particularly applicable to individual members of the committees in Christian Science churches, engaged in the distribution of literature. The righteousness resulting from the activities of these committees is in a great measure proportionate to the obedience of each worker.

Mrs. Eddy has emphasized the importance of obedience, the word "obey" and its derivatives appearing many times in her writings; and in "Miscellaneous Writings" she has devoted several pages to the subject. In the second paragraph of the article referred to (p. 116) she has given this unique definition: "Never absent from your post, never off-guard, never ill-humored, never unready to work for God,—is obedience; being 'faithful over a few things.'"

To the Christian Scientist, never to be absent from his post means not only that he shall be in his place at the appointed hour doing the material work assigned him, but also that he shall be faithful to his office of porter at the door of his own consciousness, not for an instant off guard against the errors that may try to find lodgment there in the form of idle gossip, inertia, criticism, faultfinding, and so on. These enemies are most effectively routed by reflecting such Godlike qualities as loving-kindness, wisdom, right activity. In this mental atmosphere ill-humor finds no abiding place; and those thus armed are indeed ready to work for God.
