Since a contributor to your paper voluntarily introduced the subject of Christian Science, and offered some explanations of the Christian Science religion in such a manner as to infer that Christian Science is wrong on the points discussed, it seems rather inconsistent for him now to say that he does not wish to expound the faith of another. My sole object in replying is to see that Christian Science is correctly presented and defended against misleading comment. Our critic maintains that Christian Science is in error in teaching that evil is unreal. The Bible plainly teaches that God is the only creator, and that all He made is good. If we accept God and that which proceeds from Him as the only reality, the inevitable conclusion must be that evil, the opposite of God, is but a belief which is ignorant of God. Christian Scientists have thoroughly proved, in thousands upon thousands of cases, that evil is cast out of consciousness through a true understanding of God and His creation and the realization that evil is without reality or power. The Apostle John has written, "Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God." James wrote, "Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man." Christian Science is exactly in accord with the Bible in teaching that Christ Jesus did not overcome anything real, but cast out the belief in the power and reality of evil.
With reference to Christ as being God, undoubtedly the best authority on this subject is Christ Jesus himself. On numerous occasions the Master referred to God as "my Father." He also addressed his prayers to God, and said, "My Father is greater than I." Various other statements plainly indicate that Jesus did not regard God and Christ as the same, but that Father and Son are one in being—one in nature and quality. The redemption of Christ means to have a correct understanding of God and His creation, and a correct understanding that sin, disease, and death were not created by God and are, therefore, without reality or power, and to do the works the Master commanded all his followers to do. When the true literal understanding is obtained and is supported by the humility, truth, and love which characterized all the works of the Master, then the consciousness of the redemption of Christ is present.
