Our Lesson-Sermons
FREQUENTLY the question is asked why Christian Scientists study daily the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly and then go to church on Sunday to hear it read from the desk. One answer might be: We study our Lesson daily for the purpose of freeing our consciousness from false beliefs and filling it with true thoughts, the truth about God, man, and the universe. We then listen to the reading of the Lesson on Sunday as a sacred and joyous privilege, in order to gain further light on the subject, and thereby be enabled to be and to do good, and to learn how fearlessly to meet and successfully to master the suggestions of evil which may present themselves later. The devout Christian Scientist greatly values the study of the Lessons, as he knows that their purifying, uplifting influence is permanent, extending beyond the needs of the day far into the future of spiritual development.
Realizing that spiritual understanding is attained gradually, that there can be no sudden transformation from the darkness of ignorance into spiritual light, that there is nothing spectacular in the awakening of the so-called human mind from its dream of pain and pleasure in matter into that state where the Christ appears, our wise Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, instituted for our use these Christian Science Quarterly Bible Lessons as guides along the wilderness way. The Christian Scientist rightly estimates and deeply appreciates the value of this legacy; and he patiently and prayerfully gleans from the Bible and from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy spiritual sustenance for his daily needs. As the poet reminds us:
