[Written for the Sentinel]

Because We Love

YOU did not know him,
Though you thought you did,
And bowed to him and smiled.
'T was the spirit of Love within his eyes
You recognized.

God grant that we may ever thus
Show forth the love we bear our fellow-man;
That every child we pass
May look into our eyes and smile
With friendly greeting.

Oh, may the sorrowing find comfort,
The ill, surcease from pain,
Within that Christly glance; and may we thus
Inspire all to seek the better things,
Because we love.
