My wife and I had both become so discontented with the local Lutheran church that if it had not been so irksome to apply to the county court, we should have left the church long before we did. Our concept of God did not coincide with that which we usually heard from the pulpit. Our attention was called to Christian Science. We called upon a practitioner, and learned about a different God than we had heard of up to that time, a God who, instead of punishing, bestows benefits, and who is Love. We began to attend the Christian Science services, and found in them so much of the good and beautiful that we did not dread the seven and a half miles we had to go to the services, whereas formerly the mile we had to go to church was a trial.
During one of my early visits to a practitioner I learned of the healing effect of this religion. I had worn glasses for years, because if I did not do so I always suffered severe headaches after reading. According to a doctor, these headaches were caused by defective eyesight, which I had had since birth. Since the time I was told I could safely lay aside my glasses, I have not worn them, and am able to read without having a headache.
On October 25, 1924, our little son was born. While the midwife was attending to my wife I was detained with my business for four hours. When I was at last able to look after my wife, she thought I would have to call a doctor. But I took the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and after I had read for about five minutes our son was born.
