Cause and Effect

A MECHANICAL draftsman lays out the plan of a new machine according to mathematical law so precisely that its several parts fit and work together harmoniously. He has learned to apply law, and the results produced are always proportionate to the degree of his understanding of it. New combinations for the use of mankind are continually appearing; and in various ways the world is getting an increasing measure of service through the exercise of persistent endeavor. As understanding becomes further enlarged by reason of what has been already acquired, a broader vision is constantly being attained, with a firmer grasp of the laws involved; and progress is demonstrated in still further developments.

But the materialist claims in all this to be an originator or inventor. Working under the belief of creating something. he is satisfied with his mental products and proceeds to gather for himself the benefits derivable from his so-called creation. Thus material progress has its incentive primarily in a desire for material gain or personal honor.

Mrs. Eddy makes the following statement in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 379): "The real jurisdiction of the world is in Mind, controlling every effect and recognizing all causation as vested in divine Mind." The earnest Christian Scientist studies to learn the law of God, good, that he may be prepared to obey its call for unselfed service; for "such is the law of love." Jesus' behest, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness," is a requirement of Christian Science; and by a prepared readiness to obey as the call comes, does the perfect effect of the real and only cause, God, come into one's experience. "And all these things shall be added unto you" is the inspired assurance of a like sequence or effect.
