[Written for the Sentinel]

I Will Not Doubt

I WILL not doubt, though evil claims to slay me,
Though enemies still hate and friends betray me;
For in the darkest hour Love still surrounds me,
And routs the error that no more confounds me.
I will not doubt!

Though past mistakes would point accusing finger,
Though sinful thoughts would claim the power to linger,
Still shines Thy light that lightened all the ages,
And in its beam burns up my blotted pages.
I will not doubt!

I feel the sacred morn and evening holy
Of Thy eternal day, where soar the lowly.
The deaf now hear the dumb; the blind are seeing;
And death has vanished in eternal Being.
There is no doubt!
