In your notice of Dr. Macfie Campbell's book on "Delusion and Belief"...

Cambridge Review

In your notice of Dr. Macfie Campbell's book on "Delusion and Belief" the reviewer makes, with commendation, some quotations in regard to Christian Science which would convey a false impression to anyone unacquainted with the facts. I therefore beg you kindly to allow me space for correction. With reference to "spiritism," it is there stated that "these beliefs" may give rise to Christian Science. Now, if "spiritism" is, as defined by Webster, a belief in mediumistic intercourse with departed spirits, or in spirits dwelling in material objects, it can hardly be promotive of Christian Science, which rejects any such theories, and denies any possible plurality to Spirit. Your reviewer further imputes to those who have benefited from Christian Science the "healthy attitude that even when there is some physical ailment it is often better to ignore it." It is only fair to say that this attitude cannot be claimed by Christian Scientists, since it is not their method to ignore physical ailments, but on the contrary to deal with them promptly, by detecting and removing their mental cause. Christian Scientists do not offer "pernicious opposition" to movements for improved cleanliness or sanitation, and though they may decline inoculation (when not required by law) or other medical treatment for themselves, they do not oppose its use by others.
