The Basis of Harmony

The basis of harmony is spiritual understanding. "To reach heaven, the harmony of being, we must understand the divine Principle of being," writes Mrs. Eddy on page 6 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." And since "the divine Principle of being" is God, it can be said that the basis of harmony is knowledge of God. This is true whatever the discord to be overcome. Disease, sin,—distress of whatever kind,—can be destroyed through the understanding of reality, as Christian Science shows.

All discord has thus a false foundation. It arises from the belief that there exists a power other than God, good, a substance—matter—other than Spirit, a presence other than divine Mind, a law other than spiritual law. Discord is, indeed, but another name for false belief. Let mortals examine themselves, and they will find that when inharmony is being experienced their thoughts are dwelling, not on the truth about God's presence, power, and law, but upon some phase of material belief. Instead of turning to God and declaring the truth about His perfection and omnipresence, they allow their thoughts to run wild among the erroneous concepts of material sense, with the result that inharmony, often grievous in its nature, holds sway over their lives.

Whenever inharmony is found in churches, or out of them the reason is always the same: God has been forgotten as the omnipotent One; good has been forgotten as the only real power; and evil is being worshiped, thereby stultifying in belief the law of God, which operates to bless. Discord among those who profess to know something of the basis of harmony, divine Principle, is never justifiable. It is but a testimonial to their disobedience to the law of God. At the least sign of it, every Christian Scientist worthy the name should bow the head in humble prayer, should get back to divine Principle, and in the silence of his heart purge his thoughts of every trace of the belief that evil has any existence or power to disturb the harmony of omnipresent Being. No halfway step can be taken by the one who would demonstrate harmony. He has to go the whole way in affirming the allness of good and denying reality to evil, and in adhering to his affirmation.
