I had a wonderful healing of sciatic rheumatism several years ago. I never before had such a realization of dwelling in the divine presence, and never experienced such joy as come into my consciousness when the most severe pain I ever experienced left me as quickly as when darkness disappears at the breaking of day. I had been for more than a month with my right leg drawn up so that I could not walk. The sciatic nerve felt the size of my little finger and seemed as if red hot. I had to sit bolstered up most of the time. When I would lie down, it gave me more pain. Finally the trouble settled about the heart and made it hard for me to breathe. The last twenty-four hours I suffered with it I could take but short, rapid breaths, as I could not expand the chest without increasing the pain about the heart. I was not conscious of holding any fear, but knew that divine Love would meet every need.
My wife had gone to the Wednesday evening testimony meeting, and I was sitting bolstered up in a rocker by a table upon which lay a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I opened it knowing it contained the healing word of Truth for me. I knew that this healing word had been spoken by a faithful practitioner, and I was endeavoring to bring myself into that state of consciousness where mortal sense could find no abiding place. When I opened Science and Health the first words my eyes rested upon were these (pp. 380, 381): "Every law of matter or the body, supposed to govern man, is rendered null andvoid by the law of Life, God." I knew that this word was spoken directly to me at that moment, and that the so-called law of matter which was trying to govern me was "rendered null and void by the law of Life, God." I knew that there was but one Life, God, and that this Life was my life by reflection, and was untouched by any mortal sense.
Within an hour I was breathing naturally, and free from pain. The joy that entered my consciousness is indescribable. No personal presence could be more real than was God's presence. The pain became less and less till it disappeared and I was free. I did not retire until midnight. I could not cease my sweet communion with God, so great was my joy. My gratitude was inexpressible. It was the first time for many nights I did not need to ask for help to lie down or get up; it was done with perfect ease. I had a very restful night and arose in the morning like a new creature. All pain had left the body; and in two or three days the limb was perfectly normal.
