Christian Science was presented to me in Paris, France,...
Christian Science was presented to me in Paris, France, in a time of distress, when I was living far from my native country and believing in distance and separation. The quick and complete healing, through reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, of a lady whom I knew to have been seriously ill for a long time, impressed me very much, and I felt that this religion could give me a living faith in God. From my early childhood I suffered from nervousness and other diseases thought to be hereditary and incurable, and I could never manage without drugs and different material treatments. How happy I was to leave every material means of healing, to rely entirely on God, and to become free from bondage! Since I have been in Christian Science, now more than four years, I am much healthier and happier than ever before; and I have found love, friends, and home, though not where I had looked for them. I should like to relate some of the blessings received through the study of Christian Science.
Once, when we were living in a German village, while skiing from a high mountain, I became afraid, fell, and received a very painful injury to the left foot. I could hardly get home, where I began to work in Christian Science. There were probably no other students of Christian Science in the place, and I had to work alone. The Concordance to Science and Health helped me in my study. The healing was not a quick one: I was lame about a fortnight, but during this time I learned to be patient, calm, and to unsee error, knowing the falsity of every material testimony. As I continued to declare the truth, the trouble vanished.
Christian Science has helped me to overcome many difficulties while traveling. Once we had to go from Germany to Riga by sea. From childhood I had been afraid of seasickness and had been unable to cross even a river without discomfort. As before this journey I manifested some fear, the lady through whom I came to Christian Science, and who had helped me a great deal, said to me, "If we are not yet ready to still the tempest as Jesus did it, we can clear our consciousness and express calm amid the greatest tempest;" and she pointed out to me the following passage from Science and Health (p. 306): "Undisturbed amid the jarring testimony of the material senses, Science, still enthroned, is unfolding to mortals the immutable, harmonious, divine Principle,—is unfolding Life and the universe, ever present and eternal." During our journey I absolutely refused to entertain any disturbing material thought, perceiving, as never before, the spirituality of man and the universe. When the sea became rough, those with me were uncomfortable and wondered at my cheerfulness, while I was just filled with joy and gratitude to God for His upholding hand.
