The change which Christian Science has brought about in...
The change which Christian Science has brought about in my thinking, and consequently in my life, is to me wonderful. When I first heard of it I very much doubted the existence of God; I disliked the Bible, and was not interested in the doings of the people who lived so long ago. After reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, the logic of several statements contained therein appealed to me. I soon realized that Christian Science was the truth, and that it was possible and right to be healed of sickness to-day in the same way that Christ Jesus healed. This I was glad to know, as even when quite a child it seemed to me most unfari that only the people who lived on earth at the same time that Jesus did could be healed without taking medicine.
Within a short time decided that if ever the need arose I would have Christian Science treatment instead of materia medica; but I did not want to be bothered with a religion, and so for several years I turned to the textbook only as one would turn to a medicine chest. Not once did the truth fail to meet my need: each attack of error was overcome; and one day I realized that I had not been troubled with an old difficulty, lumbago, for quite a long time. When the healing took place I do not know, but it has remained permanent, as this happened over five years ago.
For some time previous to this I had known at the bottom of my heart that I should have to make my stand for Truth sometime, and give as I had received; but I wanted to put it off until I was older, as I thought then I should not mind settling down and giving up all material pleasure. From childhood I had had the idea that religion deprived one of even the harmless pleasures of life; and I had always had a horror of religious people, because they seemed to be so narrow-minded. God does guide us back to Himself, if not in one way, then in another; for I was wakened to the fact that only pure Christian Science could free us from a wrong influence which was at work in our home; so I applied myself to the serious study of Mrs. Eddy's works. Since that time I have had more real happiness and pleasure than I ever had before. I have found that the more of God, good, I try to express, the more joy I experience. Many proofs of the protecting power of divine Love have been shown to me, and although I have had no great physical healing, minor ailments, such as severe colds, influenza, slight scalds, and burns, have been quickly overcome by the application of the truth.
