A recent issue reports a sermon by a Universalist minister...

A recent issue reports a sermon by a Universalist minister in the city which contains several references to Christian Science that need correction and explanation. He mistakenly groups Christian Science with the healings at Lourdes, psychotherapy, spiritualism, faith healing, theosophy, and Coueism, and declares its healing to be limited to the cure of hysterical or nervous diseases. All these, with the exception of Coueism, he declares, have the "hocus pocus of miracle." In considering the question of healing in Christian Science, it is important to understand that it is not similar to the other systems mentioned by the minister, or to any suggestive method used in what is known as mental healing. The sick are healed in Christian Science on a purely spiritual basis, through prayer, as explained by Mary Baker Eddy in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," which may be procured at any Christian Science Reading Room and at most public libraries.

Healing in Christian Science is not limited to nervous or functional troubles, but includes organic disease also. This fact is becoming more generally admitted by medical men. Dr. Richard C. Cabot, professor of clinical medicine and of social ethics in Harvard University, said some time ago: "The good effects of Christian Science I see on all sides. I have not the slightest doubt that it does good, that it cures disease, organic as well as functional." Dr. Charles Hunter, associate professor of clinical medicine in the University of Manitoba, said: "Christian Science has helped many persons suffering from diseases which to the medical practitioners had defied diagnosis. Christian Science, furthermore, has brought relief to individuals who were victims of organic disorder." Dr. Drummond Shiels, member of the British Parliament, is quoted as follows: "Some of the most remarkable cures I know of, wonderful cures, have been in connection with Christian Science, which I have seen myself and know." In Christian Science it is understood that "the miracle introduces no disorder, but unfolds the primal order, establishing the Science of God's unchangeable law" (Science and Health, p. 135).
